Judging from the previous feedback, there are still some people who have some misunderstandings about the vehicle wading. These will be answered later in the beginning part. The misunderstanding about wading and the correct operation method

Misunderstanding 1: Water will be sucked into the engine if it passes through the exhaust pipe, causing flameout or even damage

Some people think that when the water passes through the exhaust pipe, the water will be sucked into the engine due to oil or external water pressure and cause flameout or even damage. This sentence sounds very reasonable, but in fact it is completely wrong. In fact, the pressure generated by the engine exhaust is very high enough to spray out the water poured into the exhaust pipe. Liu Shi, deputy dean and professor of Beijing People’s Police College, and director of the Automobile Special Driving Training Center has repeatedly shown people on television that when a vehicle is wading through the water, the vehicle will not stall when the water passes through the exhaust pipe, and it can still travel. Item experiment: completely soak the car in water and turn off the flame, wait for the water to fill the exhaust pipe, and then ignite. The results of the experiment may be beyond some people's expectations: instead of blocking the exhaust gas, the water was completely discharged by the strong exhaust pressure, and the engine was successfully ignited. This experiment tells us that water immersed in the exhaust pipe will not cause flameout. Even if it damages the vehicle, it will only affect the three-way catalyst due to the instantaneous heat and cold.

Misunderstanding 2: You have to kick your feet when wading

The purpose of the big foot bombardment is to rely on pressure to prevent water from entering the exhaust pipe. This approach is completely unnecessary, and the reasons are clearly stated above. Wading at idle speed is sufficient.

Misunderstanding 3: The height of wading depends on the height of electrical equipment

Some believe that the electrical appliances and electronic control systems of vehicles will be damaged or even short-circuit if they are immersed in water. In fact, the wading sections that we generally encounter in urban areas are relatively short, and it takes less than half a minute to pass. In this case, the vehicle electrical appliances and electronic control system are not in contact with water for a short time, because the ISO9001 international quality management system stipulates that the vehicle electronic control components are required to have waterproof protection measures.

Correct operation method 1: Hang in the lowest gear before entering the water

Before entering the water, manual or manual-auto integrated models should be in the first gear; the automatic transmission should be in the “L” gear; if there is no “L”, it should be in the “2” gear. The purpose of this is to obtain the slowest speed and maximum torque by using the lowest gear of the vehicle. Slow driving is of course to prevent water from entering the intake pipe; if obstacles are encountered, the maximum torque output from the low gear can enable the vehicle to overcome the obstacles.

Correct operation method 2: Pass the water slowly, step on the accelerator slowly

When the water enters, it is necessary to reduce the vehicle speed to the slowest as possible, because when the front of the car is tilted down, water is more likely to enter the intake pipe. A little water in the intake pipe will cause water to adhere to the air filter element, and sometimes cause expansion to make the air intake. The increased resistance caused the engine to stall. After entering the water, keep the speed low to prevent the formation of water waves in front of the car from spreading over the intake pipe. Slowly step on the accelerator to prevent the wheels from slipping and losing grip or even getting stuck when encountering mud and sand underwater.

Extreme operation method: reversing and wading

When the vehicle must pass through the deeper water surface as a last resort, the method of reversing and wading can be adopted. The purpose of this is to use the rear of the car and the surrounding car body to protect the air intake and prevent it from entering as much as possible to smoothly pass the water surface.

About measurement standards

Our measurement standard takes three values: the height of the exhaust port from the ground, the half height of the wheel, and the height of the air inlet from the ground.

Exhaust vent height: The height of the exhaust vent can directly reflect how much water will enter here, but the above misunderstanding explanation has shown that even if it is flooded, it will not directly cause the vehicle to stall. However, if it is submerged too deeply, the water poured into the vehicle after the accidental flameout will permanently damage the three-way catalytic converter due to instantaneous heat and cold.

Half-height wheels: The standard for half-height wheels is a safe wading height proposed by some old drivers or some “experts”, but in fact this is not a scientific standard for measuring wading performance, we are just using it as a reference.

Air intake height: This is the vehicle's limit wading index. Once water enters here, it will directly cause the vehicle to stall. In serious cases, it will suck water into the engine and cause permanent damage.


Audi A4L

The exhaust pipe of the Audi A4L is 30 cm above the ground, and the half-height of the wheels is 32 cm. That is to say, when the water reaches half the height of the wheel, the water can basically enter the exhaust pipe, but this is not a major problem and will not damage the three-way catalytic converter. The wheel half height is recognized as a safer wading height.

The air intake of the A4L is located on the support beam under the engine cover, and the opening is forward and horizontal. The pipe connecting the air inlet and the air filter element has a certain curvature. If water enters the air inlet for a short time, it will not flow into the air filter immediately. As long as there is no moisture attached to the air filter, it will not turn off.

The car's air intake is 73 cm above the ground. This height is equivalent to 10 cm above the wheel, which is the wading limit of the car. Once the water level reaches here, the air filter element will be injected through the air inlet, which will increase the air intake resistance and turn off the flame. In severe cases, it will enter the engine. To be on the safe side, don't forcibly wading when the water has covered the entire wheel.

Volkswagen Magotan

Magotan's exhaust pipe is 32 cm above the ground and the wheel half-height is 31 cm. These two heights are basically on the same horizontal line and are generally recognized as safer wading heights. When the water level reaches this point, there is a possibility of entering the exhaust pipe, but it will also not cause the vehicle to stall, so you can safely wading.

The air intake of the car is also located in the hood next to the headlights, the opening is forward and horizontal. The air inlet pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element is not obviously bent. When water flows in from the air inlet, it will flow into the air filter element, which can easily cause flameout.

The car's air intake is 70 cm above the ground. This height is about 10 cm higher than the wheel height. Since the air inlet of this car is higher than the air filter element, if the water level reaches 70 cm of the air inlet, it will definitely enter the air filter element, so we must avoid water entering the air inlet when wading. From this point of view, once the water level is below the entire wheel, don't wade anymore.

Skoda Haorui

The height of the exhaust pipe of Skoda Haorui is 30 cm above the ground, and the half height of the wheel is 33 cm. The safer wading height is 33 cm at the half height of the wheel. When the water level reaches this position, the exhaust pipe will basically be submerged in the water, so there is no need to worry about flameout or entering the three-way catalytic converter, and you can safely pass through.

The air intake position and layout of Haorui are similar to those of Magotan. They are both at the supporting beam under the hood, with the opening forward and horizontal. The air inlet pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element has a certain curvature, and a small amount of water pouring from the air inlet will not easily flow into the air filter.

The height of Haorui's air intake is 73.5 cm above the ground. This is its maximum wading height, and the position is about 8 cm above the wheel. The height of the air intake of the car is basically the same as the ground clearance of the air filter, so the air filter element will not be completely submerged in a short time when the water level reaches here. For safety's sake, don't pass when the water has not passed the wheel.


Kia K5

The height of the exhaust pipe of the Kia K5 is 26 cm above the ground, and the half height of the wheel is 32 cm. When the water level reaches 32 cm of the safe wading height, the exhaust pipe has been completely submerged by 6 cm in the water. It will not cause flameout, and the water level has not yet reached the position of the three-way catalytic converter in the exhaust head section, so it can be safely waded.

Its air intake is located on the support beam under the engine cover, and the opening is horizontal and open forward. The pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element is not bent, but connected horizontally. If water enters the air inlet, it will flow to the air filter element, which may cause flameout.

The height of the car's air intake is 80.5 cm above the ground, which is its limit height for wading. Approximately 15 cm above the wheel. The position of the air inlet is slightly higher than the air filter element. Once the water level reaches this point, it will flow into and not pass the air filter element, causing the flame to stall or even be sucked into the engine. Due to the slightly higher height of the air inlet, there is a great risk that the water will not get too close to the air inlet when the water passes through the wheel, but when the water level reaches the apex of the wheel circumference, do not force it through.

Buick Regal

Buick Regal’s exhaust pipe is 30.5 cm above the ground, and the wheel half-height is 32.5 cm. The wheel half-height is a conservative and safe wading height. At this water level, the exhaust pipe may enter water, but it will not cause flameout, so you can ride with confidence.

The car's air intake is located behind the air intake grille, opening forward. The air filter element is located about 5 cm above the air inlet, and some water from the air inlet will not rush to the air filter element.

Regal's air intake is 61 cm above the ground, which is its limit for wading. Roughly equivalent to five-sixths of the wheel, which is the apex of the wheel hub. When the water level reaches this point, although there is a distance of about 5 cm from the air filter, it has prevented the engine from inhaling normally. Therefore, when the water level reaches the joint between the upper part of the wheel and the tire, do not continue to wading.

Buick LaCrosse

Buick LaCrosse’s exhaust pipe is 33 cm above the ground, and the wheel half-height is 32.5 cm. The height of the exhaust pipe is basically the same as the recognized safe wading height, so there is no need to worry about it.

The air intake design of LaCrosse is very similar to Regal. Even if the water reaches the intake port, it will not enter the air filter or even the engine.

The air intake of the LaCrosse is 66 cm above the ground, which is equivalent to four-fifths of the wheel. Same as Regal, when the water level reaches here, although there is still some distance from the air filter, it has prevented the normal intake of the engine. Therefore, when the water level reaches four-fifths of the wheel, it will block the engine's air intake and cause flameout. At that time, you should stop wading.

Ford Mondeo-winning

Ford Mondeo-Zhisheng's exhaust pipe is 29.5 cm above the ground and the wheel half height is 34 cm. When the water level reaches the safe wading height of half the height of the wheel, the exhaust pipe has been completely submerged in the water, but this will not directly lead to flameout and the vehicle can pass normally.

The car's air intake is located next to the headlights at the top of the grille. The air inlet pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element has a certain curvature, and a small part of the water splashed into the air inlet will not directly flow into the air filter element.

The height of the air intake of Mondeo Victory is 64 cm above the ground, which is slightly lower than the height of the entire wheel by 4 cm. In other words, the wading limit of the car is here. Once the water has passed the wheels, it means that water has entered the air inlet, which will cause the car to stall. In severe cases, water will enter the engine. Do not wading anymore.

Citroen C5

The Citroen C5's exhaust pipe has a height of 32 cm from the ground, and a half-height of the wheels is 33.5 cm. When the water level reaches the safety wading height of half height of the wheel, water may enter the exhaust pipe, but it does not hinder the normal driving of the vehicle.

The car's air intake is located under the hood, at the top of the air intake grille. The pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element is relatively straight, but there is a curved flow channel in the air collecting box where the air filter is installed. The water splashed from the air inlet can easily flow into the air collecting box, but it is not easy to wet the air filter element.

The air intake of C5 is 72.5 cm above the ground, which is about 7 cm higher than the wheel, which is the limit height for wading. Since the air filter element is lower than the air intake, once the water level reaches the air intake height, it will not pass the air filter element. Therefore, the height of a wheel is a conservative limit value for the car.

Nissan Teana

The Nissan Teana's exhaust pipe is 29 cm above the ground and the wheels are 32.5 cm high at half height. When the water level reaches the theoretically safe wheel half height, the water has passed the exhaust pipe, but the vehicle will not be stalled, so you can ride with confidence.

The air inlet of the car is located at the supporting beam under the hood, and the pipe between the air inlet and the air filter is relatively straight, and water can easily reach the air filter after flowing in from the air inlet.

The height of the air inlet of Teana is 75.5 cm, which is about 10 cm higher than the wheel. This is the limit value of the car's wading height. Since water can easily flow into the air filter element from the air inlet, it is conservative to say that when the water surface is below the entire wheel, you should not force wading.

Mazda Ruiyi

The Mazda Ruiyi's exhaust pipe is 31 cm above the ground and the wheel half height is 32 cm. When the water level reaches the wheel half-height position, water may enter the exhaust pipe, but this will not affect the normal driving of the vehicle.

The air intake of the Mazda Ruiyi is located next to the headlight behind the air intake grille, and the opening is vertically upward. There is a long vertical U-shaped pipe between the air inlet and the air filter element, and a small amount of water pouring from the air inlet will not affect the engine air intake. However, if the amount of water is large, the bottom of the U-shaped tube is filled up, even if it has not reached the air filter element, the air intake of the engine will be blocked due to the sealing of the tube, which will eventually lead to flameout.

The height of Ruiyi's air intake is 72 cm, which is equivalent to the full height of the wheel and 8 cm upwards. This is the car's wading limit. Once the water level reaches this height, it will not pass the air filter and cause flameout, and in serious cases, it will be sucked into the engine. Conservatively speaking, a water level at the height of a wheel can pass.

Honda Spurui

The height of the exhaust pipe of Honda Spirior is 28.5 cm above the ground, and the half height of the wheel is 32.5 cm. When the water level reaches the safe wading height of the wheel half height, the exhaust pipe is already submerged in the water, but it will not stop the car and can pass through normally, so there is no need to worry.

There is also a U-shaped curved pipe similar to Mazda between the air intake and the air filter element, so water will not easily flow into the air filter element. However, if the inflowing water seals the pipe to the bottom, it will also cause the engine to stall.

The height of the air intake of the Sprite is 72 cm, 8 cm above the wheel, which is its wading limit. If the water level reaches this height, it will not pass through the air filter and may enter the engine. If you are more conservative, the car can still pass through a water level at the height of a wheel.
