Audi swept the top three in the highest category LMP1 group, and the R18 etron quattro also became the first hybrid vehicle to win the highest category championship in Le Mans history.

Introduction to the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Every June, in Le Mans, a small town in northern France, the highway and block roads here will be closed to form a 13.5-kilometer-long circular circuit, and a 24-hour endurance race will be held here. This event, together with the Formula One World Championship and the World Rally Championship, is called the three top car events.

A major feature of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is that vehicles of different groups compete in the same field. Each car is driven by 3 racers in turn. The replacement does not change the car. The refueling, tire changing, and maintenance time are all calculated at the 24 o'clock hour. In the race schedule, the winner is the longest driving distance in the end.

According to the competition rules, the car is divided into four groups, simple to understand, from fast to slow, namely LMP1 group, LMP2 group, GTE-PRO (GT1) group and GTE-AM (GT2) group.

In the LMP1 group, Audi won by an overwhelming advantage. This is the eleventh time they have ruled in Le Mans. Audi sent a total of 4 racing cars, including two gasoline-electric hybrid R18 etron quattro (car 1 and car 2), and two ordinary diesel R18 ULTRA (car 3 and car 4). In the end, the champion, runner-up and runner-up were won by cars No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 respectively. Car No. 3 had a minor accident but also finished fifth. Audi completed the “personal performance” of this competition.

Only Toyota Racing Team can pose a real threat to it. They sent two gas-electric hybrid racing cars TS 030-Hybrid to participate in the competition, the car numbers are No. 7 and No. 8.

Regrettably, car No. 8 had a serious accident before nightfall on the first day of the race. At 8pm local time on the 16th, the race entered the 5th hour. Car No. 8 was squeezed by the local car No. 81 Ferrari 458 before turning into the corner. After the collision, the car leaped into the air and crashed into the tire wall, and the driver Davidson fractured his back. Six hours later, the No. 7 car also withdrew from the race due to an engine failure, so the Toyota team bid farewell to the current competition, and the subsequent race was dominated by Audi.

In terms of other groups, the top three in the LMP2 group are the 44 Honda HPD ARX 03B, 46 and 49 ORECA 03-NISSAN of the STARWORKS MOTORSPORT team; the champion, runner-up and third place in the GTE-PRO group are the 51 Ferrari 458 ITALIA and 59 respectively.
