[YesAuto News] We learned from CCTV Finance that recently the police in Bazhong, Sichuan, uncovered a case of using “ETC” to implement telecommunications network fraud. The criminal suspect sent “ETC expired certification” and other content by impersonating the name of the ETC center and other institutions to trick the victim into clicking the “phishing link” in the text message. At present, the police have arrested 22 criminal suspects from Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hainan, Jiangxi, Anhui and other places, seized more than 2.9 million yuan in stolen money, and involved more than 100 cases.
From the video, we can see that Mr. Feng from Bazhong, Sichuan received a text message on his cell phone reminding him that his ETC account will expire within 30 days. According to the requirements of the linked page, Mr. Feng entered his name, ID number, bank card number, password, and mobile phone number to submit.
However, when he entered the mobile phone verification code again to submit, in just a few seconds, the money in the bank card was quickly stolen. The police investigation found that the criminal suspect sent “ETC expired certification, system upgrade, invalid activation” and other content by posing as the ETC center, high-speed management center and other institutions to trick the victim into clicking the “phishing link” in the text message.
