  7. Bystander: Interpretation of the...

[YesAuto Design Decode] In the history of more than 70 years, the road to build cars under the Land Rover brand was full of ups and downs, and it was successively acquired by BMW, Ford and Tata Company of India. Even so, this British brand is still active in the global automotive market, which is inseparable from its unique styling design concept. How to understand the latest generation of Land Rover design, let's talk about the new car-Discovery Sport.

Who are the bystanders?

In the past two years, design has become an important part of the new car publicity campaign of car companies. Everyone likes to use a series of stories to illustrate design inspiration. “What's like here, there are unique Chinese elements” stories are not uncommon. In fact, most of these are just to meet the needs of media communication. In the real development process, the designer considers more factors than this.

In this issue of onlookers, we found two original Audi designers, and through the perspective of professional designers, we interpret those new cars that are quite topical. In the future series of topics called “The Spectator”, you will see these third-party designers analyze the models that are worth talking about on the market. The opinions, entry points and opinions of these insiders are sharp, objective and true.

—— The 3 main points discussed in this article

· What is the difference between discovering the origin of the sports version and discovering the spiritual action?

· Discover the inheritance and changes of the sports design

· Discover a comprehensive innovation in the interior design of the sports version

In recent years, Land Rover’s product sequence has been re-adjusted and turned into three major series: RANGE ROVER, DISCOVERY, and DEFENDER. Among them, the Defender obviously has the most hard-core off-road temperament, Range Rover pursues luxury attributes, and Discovery has a more exploratory spirit in a certain sense of luxury.

The Discovery Sports version we are going to talk about today is a new member of the DISCOVERY series. It can be regarded as the mid-term facelift of Discovery Freelander, and Discovery Freelander 2 is the successor to Freelander 2 (Land Rover's Freelander series is now discontinued). Having said that, the relationship may be slightly more complicated, let's draw a picture to show it.

As a mid-term revision of the Discovery of Shenxing, its Chinese name has eliminated the word “神行”, which also shows that it has completely drawn a line from Shenxing. Land Rover China translated DISCOVERY SPORT straightforwardly-the Discovery Sport version. This uses the same routine as the Range Rover Sport version.

After the mid-term remodeling of this Land Rover with the labels “domestic” and “entry”, what changes have taken place? What pure British ancestry does it still have? Let's talk about this new car from the perspective of styling design.

The two designers have been engaged in the interior and exterior design of joint venture brands, and they are good at different fields. Therefore, let's talk about their views and opinions on the sports version from the aspects of appearance and interior.

—— Where is the heritage in the classic lines

The earliest Land Rover design sketch was done on the sand of Anglesey Beach in the UK. The simple lines of Maurice Wilkes, the engineering supervisor of Rover Motors in the UK, outlined the prototype of LAND ROVER (then it meant to be used for land farming). Rover Motors).

The lines of Land Rover 70 years ago were simple, but today it still maintains the classic silhouette. Some people say that when children in kindergartens paint their cars for the first time, they often paint Land Rover or the most like Land Rover, because the horizontal and vertical outline of Land Rover is too classic.

Although Land Rover was born because of the war, the original intention was to deal with the muddy rural roads in Britain, but the British Prime Minister Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and other celebrities have owned Land Rover vehicles, and it has gained the strength of the British royal family. Land Rover quickly became a British luxury car brand. Land Rover has its own unique positioning and philosophy. Even in the face of strong German rivals, it still has a place in the luxury field.

In a sense, Land Rover, which has a history of more than 70 years, has promoted the development of global SUV models and affected people's aesthetics of SUVs. Ma Ke very much appreciates Land Rover's grasp of the proportions and shapes of SUVs. He believes that this is also in line with the traditional Chinese aesthetic. The characteristics of tough, tall and majestic, and style are completely in the interests of consumers.

The discovery of the Vision concept car foreshadows the design trend of the Land Rover Discovery car series, and today this mid-term remodeled DISCOERY SPORT has also been adjusted along the road of “big brother”. In terms of appearance, the changes from Discovery of God to Discovery of Sports are mainly reflected in the front and rear of the car, and more specifically, the design of the car lights and bumper.

The routine of car companies for mid-term remodeling of products often uses limited costs to give users a sense of freshness, such as changing the front and rear bumpers, the shape of the lights, and some interior trims, while the main body frame of the body will basically remain unchanged. Even sheet metal parts such as “four doors and two covers” will not be changed.

Ma Ke believes that a luxury brand must be inherited in design, rather than following the times. From a designer's point of view, it is not easy to do this. Why do you know it is a Land Rover from a distance? Why does each Land Rover have an unspeakable unique feeling? Behind these ordinary people's subjective feelings are the “doorways” that designers only understand. The seemingly simple body shape actually includes logical methods such as end-to-end echoing, smooth transition, and unity of contrast.

Early Range Rover and Defender will give the impression of “square box”, “square box” creates a calm and down-to-earth, this is the most familiar Land Rover attitude. With the changes of the times, the “square box” tends to be “square with circle”. The slightly rounded chamfer not only makes the car body more aerodynamic, but also more dynamic in shape.

In Ma Ke's words, it is found that although the side of the sports version looks simple, it is full of tension, which emphasizes the sense of strength that an SUV model should have, coupled with the prominent fender profile, so that the body It seems that he is ready to go, and he has enough muscles for a 100-meter sprint.

There is no doubt that this is a standard Land Rover. It has the familiar “clam” engine compartment cover, solid body proportions and powerful fender lines. But Ma Ke believes that as a member of the discovery car series, this car also has some things that she doesn't like, such as the license plate frame is designed in the center of the rear of the car.

For other cars, it is normal for the rear license plate frame to be placed in the middle, but for the Discovery series, this seems to lose the taste of a DISCOVERY.

—— New era and “straight man” temperament

The interior of the Discovery Sport version is much more innovative than that of the Discovery Shenxing. This allows everyone to see the sincerity of Land Rover's mid-term facelift. It is an important reason to buy an updated DISCOVERY SPORT.

Land Rover didn’t blindly do dolls. The Range Rover and Discovery cars use different screen designs. The former is somewhat similar to Audi’s “three-screen” design. The instrument panel, central display, and air conditioning control area are all LCD displays. Although the air-conditioning control area is integrated with touch control, it is not a liquid crystal display. “Two screens” and “three screens” seem to be a way for Land Rover to express different levels of luxury.

Land Rover was born based on the muddy roads in the countryside. It has a rough side in its bones. Its wildness and hardcore are reflected in the interior design. The first generation of Freelander embodies the horizontal and vertical style of the dashboard, and now it is found that the sports version still inherits this “straight male” style.

In the final analysis, it is found that the sports version is still a full-time four-wheel drive Land Rover with an off-road spirit. Although it is difficult to compare with the off-road performance found by “Big Brother”, it can fully satisfy most people's daily outings, occasionally on non-paved roads. Sasara's needs. Therefore, Land Rover designers have also worked hard on the space practicality of the interior.

to sum up:

In Land Rover's car series, we no longer see the word “Shen Xing”. “FREELANDER” has long gone away from us, but it has set a precedent for entry-level Land Rover cars. Therefore, we have seen that Land Rover designers have a lot of tribute to their predecessors on the Discovery Sports Edition. At the same time, it has also added many features of the new era over time.

Beauty and ugliness often come from people's subjective feelings. From the perspective of car designers, we will find that some perceptual cognitions are actually created by designers through professional methods and means. I don’t know if you have a new understanding of Land Rover after reading this content.
