Shape design and size
From the sixth generation to the seventh generation, the body length and wheelbase of the Golf have increased by 56mm and 59mm respectively. A longer wheelbase will not only bring more seating space, but also benefit the driving stability of the vehicle. Compared with the 6th generation, the Golf 7 has become more “flat”, the height of the body is reduced by 27mm, the width is increased by 13mm, and the center of gravity of the vehicle is lower, which helps it improve its road performance.
With the development of the seventh-generation models, the Golf has become sharper and more angular almost every time. The shape of the headlights has not changed after the domestic production, but the details of the lamp cavity have been simplified. The overseas version of the U-shaped LED daytime running lights was replaced by a set of yellow halogen bulbs with chrome decoration, and the overall aura dropped by 10%. The Golf 7 is a bit across the board in the choice of wheels and tires. Compared with the appearance, I think the interior of the Golf 7 has changed more, and there is a rhythm of becoming rich and handsome. The workmanship and materials of the 6th-generation golf are definitely among the best in the same level. You can say that it has a sense of quality, but it is somewhat different from the praise words of luxury and dynamic. I think this is exactly the message that the seventh-generation golf wants to pass to us.
Volkswagen's central control design has always had good functionality. I think this is one of the reasons why it has only been fine-tuned for many years. But the same thing will inevitably get bored after a long time. Volkswagen naturally understands this truth, so on the Golf 7, a lot of changes have been made to the interior. The symmetrical center console is changed to a driver-centric design, and piano paint decoration is added to the panel, which is a breakthrough for the traditionally conservative public.
Functionality is still Volkswagen's strong point, so look at the golf steering wheel and trip computer. ACC adaptive cruise system

The whole operation is quite simple, one thumb can be easily completed by the multi-function button on the left side of the steering wheel. In my opinion, the meaning of electronic handbrake is more to improve the grade. In addition to improving the grade and saving space for the position of the gear, it is actually not as simple and straightforward as the traditional handbrake. Of course, some female users may find it labor-saving. Electronic buttons are more comfortable to use, and the public’s listing of this configuration as standard also means that consumers who like traditional handbrakes have no choice.
Let's talk about the automatic parking function. It can provide good convenience during daily driving, and it is indeed very labor-saving when waiting for the traffic light. However, this automatic parking system has a flaw that cannot be ignored: it has poor ride comfort when using the throttle to release the parking. This feeling is not very comfortable for the driver or the passengers.

Automatic start-stop system
Nowadays, the automatic start-stop system has gradually become popular in the domestic market, and Volkswagen models are also very keen to assemble this energy-saving and environmentally friendly configuration, but the start-stop system on the Golf 7 is fairly smooth. In addition, during the test drive, I also found a small problem. That is, when the vehicle stops, the first throttle will always respond a little bit, the same throttle depth, the engine speed can not be raised. As for the original intention of this design, it is probably to protect the engine.
Central Control Entertainment System
The new central entertainment system on the Golf 7 is called MIB Standard Plus, which integrates many functions in one, including radio, navigation, reversing video, AUX-in/iPod/MP3 audio interface, car CD, Bluetooth, picture display, volume with speed There is no shortage of many useful functions such as adjustment and voice dialogue.
The interface of the entire system is neat and clear, and the operation is simple and clear. The display also has a built-in distance sensor, which is a real improvement compared to the old model. The disadvantage is that the screen resolution is low, and the response speed of the system can only be considered satisfactory. Let’s start with the engine. The 1.4T high-power top-mounted model for this test drive is equipped with a brand-new EA211 1.4TSI engine. After the new generation, this 1.4TSI engine has made a lot of progress compared with the old model. First, it finally abandoned the cast iron cylinder block that has been used for many years. It adopts aluminum alloy cylinder block and cast iron cylinder liner structure, and the crankshaft is also made by forging technology. , Coupled with the return to the timing belt design, in terms of light weight, this engine has achieved considerable results, compared with EA111 weight reduction of about 20kg. In tuning, this 1.4TSI engine is also quite aggressive, with a maximum power of 150 horsepower (110 kilowatts) and a maximum torque of 250 N·m. Compared with the old model, it has increased by 19 horsepower and 30 Nm, which is almost the same as the 1.8TSI engine of the previous generation EA888.
The gearbox is still the 7-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox that we are familiar with. The specific tuning and logic have also been changed from the previous generation. I will also explain in detail later. From the perspective of the technical content of the power system alone, the Golf 7 is still unable to outperform the same level. After all, the domestic version has not transplanted overseas closed-cylinder technology, so it lacks the feeling of “tall”.
The increase in power is more than 19 horsepower
This time the Golf 7 has three different power options. The launch of the 1.4TSI high-performance model we tested is obviously to make up for the gap in the market between ordinary Golf and Golf GTI. In addition to the obvious improvement in engine parameters, the Golf 7 has also made considerable progress in lightening, with a weight reduction of nearly 100kg (of which the engine accounts for 20kg). As the saying goes, 10 more horsepower is not as good as 10 kg lighter. With this increase or decrease, the power is improved by leaps and bounds.
When the start button is pressed, the engine vibrates very slightly, and the sound insulation level in the cabin still maintains the high level of the previous generation. The suspension type pedal is not as good as the previous generation of floor-type design, but there is no obvious difference in terms of daily use. The early stage of the throttle is still a bit “timber”. In daily situations, the gearbox will basically choose to upshift at 1700rpm. The timing of shifting in the D gear has been delayed from the previous generation, and the power increase is not small. The golf 6 is due to the speed. The situation of too low and dragging is well resolved.
In contrast, the S gear is not as neurotic as the old model. The basic speed will be maintained at 2500rpm, the throttle response is positive, and the power output is smooth. With the deepening of the throttle, the feeling of pushing the back feels like a hand.
How about comparing with rivals at the same level? Thanks to the advantages of the gearbox's response speed and the engine's preference for mid-to-front output (torque platform is 1700-3000rpm), in daily conditions, the power experience of the Golf 7 is more comfortable than Yinglang XT and Tiida 1.6T.
As for the smoothness of the Golf 7, there is no big difference from the previous generation. The switching between 1st and 2nd gear still occasionally frustrates, but at other times the gear switching is basically not felt. When you step on the accelerator deeply, the gearbox will respond quickly according to the depth of the accelerator. The downshifting action is still sharp, and the speed of shifting like a knife with a hand is still the benchmark level of this level.
Compared with cars in the same class, this gearbox can be said to highly integrate performance, comfort and efficiency. If quality and reliability are not considered, its comprehensive capabilities are still a benchmark. However, after two previous large-scale recalls, even if manufacturers have made considerable improvements to the durability and reliability of the 7-speed DSG gearbox, consumers’ impression scores have already been greatly reduced.
Multi-link variable torsion beam, the chassis is more sporty and the driving texture is more stable, and the rear comfort is affected
The use of the MQB platform has brought many new technologies and equipment, but the rear suspension with torsion beam structure is an out-and-out cost-compromise choice. You must know that the Golf 7 with the same configuration overseas uses a rear suspension with a multi-link structure. Although the result of the reduction cannot be changed, the good news is that in the two days of contact, the rear torsion beam suspension still feels quite good.
The suspension damping of the Golf 7 is more tenacious, the overall road feel is clearer, and the comfort on paved roads is excellent. When cornering or fast merging, the body does not have the flickering feeling of the Golf 6 and the compact suspension Makes the driving texture more stable.
When dealing with bumps such as deceleration bumps, the front suspension will also cleanly absorb most of the impact and vibration. Although not as thorough as the height 6, the comfort of the driver in the front row is still guaranteed. However, the treatment of passengers in the rear row is not as high as 6. The non-independent structure of the torsion beam always makes the body shake when passing the deceleration sill in the curve, and the suspension bounce is more rigid than the front row. Fortunately, the Golf is not a model that will be a selling point in the future. Taking care of the front passengers in place, I think the task of this suspension is 70% completed.
Having said that, if the test drive is the Golf 7 with a rear multi-link structure, maybe it can achieve a better balance between comfort and sports, and bring more amazing performance. After all, the hypothesis is an assumption. We can do nothing about the fact that the Golf 7 has a full torsion beam rear suspension. We can only look forward to the early arrival of the new generation of Golf GTI.
Summary: The replacement of the rear suspension from a multi-link to a lower cost torsion beam structure is indeed a reduction. The performance of this suspension in daily driving is actually good. The more resilient suspension tuning brings the Golf 7 It has a more sporty texture, but the comfort has been greatly affected, especially in the back row.
However, it is absolutely unreliable to talk on paper whether it reaches the benchmark or not. The “actual measurement” shows the true knowledge. In the end, the strength of the test field will be clear.
Power performance: benchmark level
The acceleration test is quite lack of technical content, because this 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox does not have any ejection function. In order to protect the clutch, when the brake is stepped on, the gearbox speed is only allowed to start at 1500rpm. After several attempts, I found that the foolish way of releasing the accelerator pedal at the moment the brake is released is the fastest and most effective way to start. There will be a little hesitation at the start, but once the speed starts to rise, the maximum torque of 250 Nm gushes out like a tide during the middle acceleration, and the tires will slip slightly in the middle. After the speed exceeds 5000 rpm, the power is attenuated.
After several attempts, the fastest result we finally measured was 8.2 seconds, which was consistent with the official result, and the performance was satisfactory. Even if this result is compared with several 1.6T opponents at this level (Hiroshima 8.2/Tiida 8.17), it is not at all inferior. Therefore, we believe that the power performance of the Golf 7 has reached the benchmark level of the same level.
