[YesAuto original test drive] The BMW X5 does not need to be introduced too much. Since the moment it came out in 1999, it has been the star model in the SUV camp, but the power system has not had an essential leap over the years, with the 3.0-liter and The 4.8-liter naturally aspirated engine is indeed showing its old state. The most important thing that the 2011 X5 has done is to carry out a comprehensive upgrade in this regard!
● Overview of appearance, interior and space
First of all, it is still the old rules. Take a look at the evolution of appearance, interior, space, etc., and give a conclusion first: a small change. What I mean is that the content of this part is not the focus of this upgrade. The original X5 is already very coordinated. At this stage, any idea of a facelift is superfluous. If you really can’t wait to learn about the performance of the new power matching, then skip this page.
1. Appearance and body size are basically unchanged, minor changes in local styling
The body size of the 2011 X5 has no expansion, which may be a pity for some consumers who are greedy. Due to the line design, the whole car looks even smaller than the actual size. This is different from its positioning of “high performance”. “The three words are closely related, and the sturdy visual effect is not what the X5 should want.
Many details of the front face and the rear of the car have been fine-tuned, and the design language of the M series has been introduced to tell you directly that it has become stronger. This is also a manifestation of “form obeys content”. However, the X5 is not an X5M, and it does not need to be so extreme. For example, although the air inlets at the bottom of the front face look very violent, they are actually blocked.
2. The interior design has no innovative quality with minimal flaws
I don't know if I can see the brand new BMW interior in the rest of my life. At least according to the current momentum, I don't expect it in a short time. This time the X5 still uses the interior design that is already familiar to the extreme. The advantage is that you can figure out where the various function keys are probably without spending too much time. The disadvantage is that the aesthetic fatigue is serious.
Most of the interior material selection and assembly process are satisfactory, but problems can be seen in some small places. The fineness of the American factory is still different from the German style. I am not denying the X5 interior. It's excellent, but it's already at this price, and it can be confidently striving for perfection.
3. Ample space for riding and enough storage space
Regarding the emergence of the third row of seats, many readers were curious about how this part can be used. After some personal experience, we think it’s okay to sit with children, and there are air-conditioning vents, cup holders, etc., which are quite comfortable, but adults will be very wronged here, short distances can tolerate, long distances are forgotten .
The height of the experiencer in the picture is about 1.73 meters. He can get quite ample space in the driving position and the second row. As for the third row, he is not very optimistic.
Regarding the content of this page, it is not the focus of this upgrade, so I will not focus on it. My colleague Zhai Yuan has published a detailed real shot article before, and you can refer to this article for more specific understanding.

● The actual driving performance of the new powertrain
This time I tested a 3.0L displacement model. Regarding the performance of another 4.4T engine, you can refer to the upcoming 5 series GT test article. Although they are not the same car series, they use the same engine and The gearbox is still very valuable for comparison.
Back to the topic, the 35i model uses a 3.0-liter twin-scroll single-turbocharged engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Only theoretically analyzed, the power is stronger, the shift is smoother, and it should have better driving performance. Let's see the actual effect.
1. The feeling of the engine big horse-drawn car
Once stubbornly insisting on the natural aspiration route, but now fully promoting the use of turbocharging, what makes BMW compromise? Regardless of how the decision-making level considers, I have to admit that this change brings more driving pleasure. During the entire test drive, it is difficult to associate the dynamic performance of the body with the weight of more than two tons. Since the time of the full explosion of 400N·m torque is very early, the words “work hard” and “slow” are completely impossible to come by. By the way, the speed of the vehicle-called Xun Meng is not very appropriate-I prefer to describe it with ease. If it is not for the higher field of view to remind me at all times, I would most likely regard it as a compact family car.
Cruise at 120km/h on the highway, and the speed is only about 1650rpm. At this time, the power reserve is still quite sufficient. Don’t forget that its peak torque output range can last up to 5000rpm. With the deepening of the throttle, a steady stream of The power is transmitted, and when the speed exceeds 4000rpm, the roar of the thick and sweet engine gradually becomes obvious. It is better to stop it, and don't let the ticket spoil your interest.
Previously, the smoothness of the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine was well-known, while the turbocharged version has its own characteristics in this regard. Although the theoretical peak torque starts at 1300rpm, the actual feeling is that this node is not particularly fixed. , It takes a while to get used to its character.
2. The gearbox responds sensitively and smoothly does not lose double clutch
Regarding the key words of this gearbox, I think Pingshun is in the first place, although the personality difference between the D gear and the S gear is also obvious. The D gear shift action is very active, the upshift has been completed at less than 1400 rpm, and it seems to be in the 8th gear at 60km/h. Personally, I am not used to this kind of adjustment that is too obviously inclined to comfort. Even if I deliberately step on the accelerator, it only delays the shift timing a little, and only the floor oil will be willing to enter the range above 6000rpm. Perhaps a slightly more radical adjustment will be more in line with the X5's personality. After all, it is its own job to provide sports experience, and it is more appropriate to leave the comfort to the 7 series.
If you don't want to be unremarkable, then you will definitely like the X5's S gear. The shift timing is between 2500-3000rpm, which is still so smooth, but the power output will be better coordinated at this time. Compared with the previous brisk, the X5 is more suitable for the word fast, and the deep pedal is more important. After entering the red line area, I was willing to upshift. I carefully observed the whole process. This gearbox did not seem to have an intermediate link when downshifting. Instead, it jumped directly from the high gear to the low gear through the intermediate gear. The speed drop was quite large.
Regardless of the mode, the gearbox always embodies exceptional smoothness. The effect created by the 8 tangible physical gears may not be much worse than the dual-clutch gearbox, and it can also withstand greater Torque, and I believe that later maintenance costs will be more advantageous. In short, choosing to use an 8-speed gearbox is a very smart decision.
● Test drive summary
If the advantage of a small-displacement supercharged engine lies in the balanced performance of economy and power, then a large-displacement supercharged engine takes more power performance improvement as its primary task. The power upgrade of the 2011 X5 can be said to be successful. For the time being, no matter what performance the 4.4T will have, this 3.0T is more than enough to handle a body of more than two tons. At the same time, the introduction of the 8-speed gearbox also solved another problem: excessive fuel consumption. During the test drive, a combined fuel consumption of 13.8 liters appeared, which is satisfactory for a large displacement SUV.
Someone once said that a car like the BMW X5 is a very contradictory product. On the one hand, it does not have many advantages in off-road capability among SUVs. On the other hand, if you want road performance, why not just buy a 3 series? Maybe in the era of natural inhalation, I might think about this point carefully and give an ambiguous answer. But now, in the face of the strong combination of new engines and new gearboxes, only driving pleasure will be my focus. Who cares about the problem of vehicle classification? Today, when diversified development is emphasized, people like products with strong comprehensive strength, but a comprehensive and perfect model may never appear, so is the distinctive personality more attractive at this time?
