[YesAuto in-depth experience] In the previous article, we conducted paint tests on a number of Ford and Skoda models (click here to view), but the final results are quite different. This time we randomly selected Dongfeng Honda and FAW-Volkswagen Two brands, look at the actual performance of their models on sale.
● Testing equipment:
We use a coating thickness gauge with model DT-156 and brand CEM. This instrument can detect magnetic metals (iron/steel, etc.) and non-magnetic metals (aluminum alloys, etc.), and detect coatings on different materials. It will automatically switch when layering. As for the instrument, we will not introduce too much. For the specific parameters, please refer to the actual photos taken in the manual.
Note: The value we measured is the overall film thickness of the paint, that is, all the coatings above the steel plate, in μm (micrometers).
● Detection method:
We select different parts of the vehicle (such as: door, engine compartment cover, etc.) for sampling, and each part has multiple sampling points (middle, left, and right), and each sampling point uses multiple sampling to average. To minimize the measurement error.
● How thick is the car paint reasonable?
According to the “QC T 484-1999 Paint Surface Quality Standard” in the automotive industry standard, we limit the minimum paint surface thickness of vehicles. What is the minimum limit, that is, leaving aside the paint quality, the paint thickness of this car cannot be less than how many μm to qualify.
◆ According to the TQ2 project in this standard, we divide the minimum paint surface into two reference standards:
First: It is the standard for the cheapest pure entry-level economical mini-car (the price of a bare car is less than 50,000). Its thinnest paint surface should not be less than 90μm. We can require the paint surface thickness of this grade model. Said to be relatively low, when the result is less than 90μm, we can also regard it as cutting corners.
Second: It is stipulated for any model with a price of more than 50,000 yuan: the minimum cannot be less than 120μm (hard index). If it is less than 120μm, we can also regard the manufacturer as cutting corners on the paint surface.
Note: You can find a problem. There is no requirement for the upper limit of thickness in the two standards. In theory, the thicker the paint is, the better, but we will not ignore the weird numerical results, such as: the car price is 100,000. However, it is not normal to have a paint thickness of 200μm or more than that of a model with a price of one million. Here we will analyze the specific model in detail, and we will certainly not implement the logic of the thicker the paint, the better.

◆ Measurement method of average value of each point:
For example, if we calculate the average thickness of the center point of the engine compartment cover, we sample the center point 3 times and take the average value.
◆ Measurement method of component average value:
For example: To calculate the average thickness of the engine compartment cover, first obtain the final score of 5 points (center, front, rear, left, and right) of the engine compartment cover (the average of the three results measured at each point), and then calculate these 5 points. The average of the points is the average thickness of the entire engine compartment cover.
● Special instructions:
1. After the measurement of each vehicle, the instrument will be adjusted to zero to ensure accuracy.
2. In order to ensure the reliability of the data, all the vehicles we selected for inspection are commercial vehicles, and all vehicles have not been processed, so it is inevitable that there will be dust and dirt, and the vehicle's visual experience is not very good. Please forgive me, but You don't need to worry about the accuracy of the data. We cleaned up the sampling points during sampling to eliminate the influence of dirt on the data.
3. The individual differences of each car are different, and the error of the instrument does exist, so our data is only for the tested commercial car.
4. Whether the car paint is firm or not is not only determined by the thickness, but also related to the hardness, ductility and abrasion resistance, but the thickness is also an indicator.
● Dongfeng Honda models on sale
◆ Honda Civic: The paint is thinner, all lower than the 120μm standard
After measuring the various parts of the body, only the paint thickness of the engine cover and the roof is close to the standard, and the others are around 100, which is far from the actual specified thickness.
◆ Sibo Rui: The overall level is not much different from the Civic, and it does not meet the 200,000 price.
Among the models sold by Dongfeng Honda, the sales performance of Sperui is not satisfactory, but the style design and workmanship are still very good in the same level. However, after the paint thickness test, its actual performance has not improved much compared with the Civic, which makes people feel that it is not in line with its own price of 200,000 yuan.
◆ Alison: The whole trunk is wrapped by plastic material, which cannot be measured, and other parts have average performance
The exterior of Alison’s trunk is wrapped in plastic, so it is impossible to measure the thickness of the paint, but in terms of safety, you don’t have to worry about it. Plastic materials are only used for exterior decoration. This should reduce the risk of scratching in the later stage. Maintenance costs. As for the performance of other parts, compared with the previous two models, they are basically in the same range.
◆ CR-V: The performance of the paint thickness is not surprising
The overall performance is basically the same as other models, most of the average values are around 100μm, only the paint surface of the engine cover is close to the national standard of 120μm. The trunk cover is also made of a large number of plastic materials, so only the part of the exposed part was measured for thickness.
◆ Siming: It shows the honest characteristics of its own brand, which is in sharp contrast with the Civic of the same level.
Although Siming is nominally an independent brand, the overall manufacturing process and technology still have a close relationship with the Honda Civic, so we also tested it. The final result is quite satisfactory. The average value of each part is above 100μm, and more than half are close to and exceed the national standard, which is in sharper contrast with other models.
● FAW-Volkswagen models on sale
◆ Jetta: a big difference from the standard value
I think the actual performance of the Jetta is basically expected. After all, the current price is close to 70,000 yuan, and the actual performance is basically around 90μm. This is believed to have a lot to do with its cost control, but from a standard perspective. Look, it still has a big gap, which is also the thinnest paint among many models measured today.
◆ Bora: The actual performance of each part is slightly lower than the standard.
The measured data of each part is slightly lower than the 120μm standard, and the actual difference is controlled within 10μm, and there is no big difference in the thickness of the paint surface of each part.
◆ Golf: slightly lower scores on the front and rear side doors and trunk cover
The performance of the Golf basically meets the national requirements, and the paint thickness of the front and rear doors and the trunk cover is only about 5μm. Such performance is still satisfactory. The overall performance is not much different from that of the Bora, which belongs to the same range of performance. in.
◆ Sagitar: The overall performance is at the same level as Bora
The overall performance of Sagitar is in the same range as Golf and Bora. The average value measured is slightly lower than the standard of 120μm, and the difference is basically controlled at about 10μm. The actual performance of these three cars is not much different, and the results are basically satisfactory.
◆ Magotan: The thickness of the door is slightly thin, and other parts are above the standard value
In the final test results of Magotan, only the thickness of the door is slightly lower than the standard, and other parts are above the standard, and the paint thickness of the roof and hood has exceeded the standard value by 10μm. The overall body paint thickness is measured today The performance of the models is quite outstanding.
◆ CC: The overall performance is similar to that of Magotan, and the thickness of the door part is slightly thinner
The performance of FAW-Volkswagen CC is very close to that of Magotan. The door part is still slightly thinner, and the other parts can reach the standard of 120μm. The paint thickness of the fender is very small from the standard, and the overall performance is satisfactory.
Today, we conducted a survey on the paint thickness of Dongfeng Honda and FAW-Volkswagen models on sale. The performance of Dongfeng Honda’s on sale models is far from the national standard. However, Siming, which is sold as an independent brand, shows a difference. The overall performance is better than other models, but the price is lower than that of the Civic of the same level. The Jetta, which has been sold by FAW-Volkswagen for many years, does not perform well in terms of paint finish. I believe this has a certain relationship with its ever-decreasing price. Some parts are already below the 90μm standard. Although the performance of mainstream Bora, Golf and Sagitar did not significantly exceed the standard value of 120μm, they are basically close to each other. Compared with Dongfeng Honda's models of the same level, the performance of Magotan and CC is satisfactory. The thickness of the paint on the part is slightly thinner.
