[YesAuto technology] In 2011, at the TMEC groundbreaking ceremony, Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda made a promise that models equipped with domestically-made hybrid powertrains will be produced and sold by FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota, which has finally been fulfilled. The Corolla/Ralink dual engine is officially listed. The price range of the Corolla dual engine is 139,800 to 175,800, and the Leilink dual engine is 139,800 to 159,800. Compared with the price of the previous Prius, it is now possible to buy a hybrid car at the price of a compact car, although without any subsidies, such a price is enough to impress people. What Toyota is doing now is just like Volkswagen’s main push for TSI+DSG powertrains back then. It wants to use this method to open the door of China’s new energy vehicle market. Today I’m going to Toyota’s R&D base in China. The core components of the power system are locally developed there.

After years of publicity and popularization, consumers no longer ask whether they need to find a place to recharge the hybrid vehicle (non-plug-in type), but they are still not assured of the key components of the vehicle. Import Will parts repair be expensive? Is it expensive to replace the battery pack? Problems like this are about to become the past. The hybrid system of the dual-engine Corolla/Ralink has been fully localized. It has a 5-year warranty of 140,000 kilometers for the whole vehicle, and the warranty period of the hybrid system is as long as 8 years and 200,000 kilometers. Enough to last you to change a car, there is no reason to refuse.

The Prius was introduced to the country in 2005. After 10 years of hard work, Toyota finally completed the localization of the hybrid power system, found a suitable supplier partner in China, and reduced the price of the Corolla/Ralink dual engine to less than half of the price when the Prius was launched. Make full popularization possible.

Toyota Motor R&D Center (China) Co., Ltd. (TMEC) is the sixth largest R&D organization established by Toyota in the world. The localization of important parts and components of hybrid vehicles in China is carried out here. As the engine between the core components, the model is 8ZR-FXE, the displacement is 1.8L, and the Atkinson cycle design is used, which is different from the ordinary Otto cycle engine. The advantage of this type of engine is that it is more fuel-efficient than ordinary engines, but it also has poor low torque. Therefore, ordinary gasoline vehicles rarely use this type of engine. But for the hybrid power system, the electric motor can just make up for the problem of insufficient low torque, and it is perfectly solved. The Corolla/Ralink Shuangqing engine has the same parameters as the Prius (the two engine models are different), the maximum power is 73 kW/99 horsepower, the maximum torque is 142 N·m, and it can use 92# gasoline.

In a hybrid power system, the role of the drive axle is more important than the engine, taking into account the functions of the gearbox, and coordinating the engine and the electric motor to work together. The power split device uses a planetary gear structure, which not only realizes the function of shifting, but also switches the power between various states in which the engine and the electric motor drive the vehicle forward in turns/together. While the principle is complicated, it must be smooth and comfortable. It is not simple. Toyota has rich experience in this area.

For hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles, the safety and practicability of the battery are the issues that users are most concerned about. Safety first is a must, and then the adaptability in actual use. In low temperature conditions, the discharge capacity of the battery will be reduced, if the battery is too low, it will affect the use. The battery of Corolla/Ralink can reach more than 85% discharge capacity at -20℃, so it can be used with confidence.

The hybrid power system mounted on the hybrid Corolla/Ralink is further optimized on the basis of the third-generation Prius, but full localization is the real focus, reducing production costs and making the installed models more competitive. It is possible for hybrid models to be fully popularized. Regarding the issue of localization, the most critical point is quality control, and this is what the R&D center has been doing before, and it is also the purpose of our trip. In the parts factory, we see the production process of the drive axle and how to control the quality. Due to the limited information provided by the government, we were unable to show everyone what we saw and heard in the parts factory, but after the field experience, we are confident in the quality of this hybrid system.
