[YesAuto Race] A few days ago, McLaren celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first victory of the Indy 500. The legendary racing car M16B, full of honors, once again met the world.

The M16B is equipped with an in-line four-cylinder 2.65L turbocharged engine with four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshaft design. The maximum power is 750 horsepower. In the Indy 500 race in 1972, the M16B averaged 162.962 mph. (260.7392 km/h), won three Indy 500 championships in 1972, 1974 and 1976, and was regarded as a classic by McLaren fans.

In 1963, Bruce McLaren established the “McLaren Racing Co., Ltd.” in Woking. Although it is a typical British racing company, they have shown their interest in and enthusiasm for different racing cultures. McLaren racing cars can be seen in the Indianaapolis 500, the Canadian-American Challenge Cup and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This “multi-party attack” model of participation continued from the 1960s to the 1980s. Since then, the focus of development has shifted to F1, and McLaren has gradually faded out of other events.

McLaren, who adhered to the British concept, participated in the Indy 500 in 1970 for the first time, but the result was not satisfactory; the second year McLaren made a comeback, changed the design thinking, and built a new car that catered to the characteristics of the race to help them get the pole position. Achieved a good result as a runner-up; by 1972, McLaren, which had found a way to win, made persistent efforts. The M16B they designed was invincible in the competition and won the first championship after entering the Indy 500.

The success of that year was not only in Indy, but also in F1, F2 and Canada-US Challenge. They also won the Indy 500 championship in 1974 and 1976.
