[YesAuto Technology] With the gradual improvement of China's local R&D and testing capabilities, more and more R&D and tuning projects of joint venture car companies have landed in China, and R&D localization has become a reality. Recently, I was fortunate to go to the Changan PSA Peugeot Citroen Research Institute in Shenzhen to learn about the development details of the DS series models. What kind of research and development and chassis tuning work did the DS series models do before they were launched on the market? Let us enter the Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center to find out.

● Emission laboratory

From April 1, 2016, 11 eastern provinces and cities including Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei have begun to implement the National V emission standards for motor vehicles. Vehicles that do not meet the standards cannot be sold on the market. Since January 1, 2018, all new cars must meet the national five emission standards. During the model development phase, the new car will conduct various emission tests in the emission laboratory to verify whether the emission standard of the new car meets the regulatory requirements for putting it on the market.

In the emission laboratory, the vehicle will undergo fuel consumption testing and emission testing. Does the vehicle emissions meet the national five standards? How about fuel consumption per 100 kilometers? Tests can be carried out in this laboratory.

There are different test methods for different test standards, and experimenters conduct different standard tests according to different test procedures.

For the latest 1.6T engine on the DS model, the total particulate matter measured in the National V test standard test is 0.0009g/km (the National V standard limit is 0.0045g/km). That is to say, theoretically, the total weight of all particulate matter emitted by a model equipped with this engine and traveling 100km is 0.09g. It can be seen that the severe smog is not mainly caused by vehicles that comply with emission regulations. Industrial coal burning and vehicles that do not comply with emission regulations are the culprits.

For the fuel consumption test of Changan Peugeot Citroen, the experimenter needs to perform a real car taxi test to obtain the vehicle wind resistance, mechanical resistance, tire rolling resistance and other parameters before the experiment. Input these parameters into the drum system to make the fuel consumption test closer to the actual value. For laboratories where the test conditions are not so good, the resistance provided by the drum is set according to the resistance curve allowed by the test standard, so that the test value deviates more from the true value.

Compared with driving the new model to the test drive field to run fuel consumption and emission tests. In addition to being more efficient, conducting the above tests in the laboratory can also ensure the uniformity of the test environment, so that the test results of the same items of different models are comparable, and the test results can be further studied and archived.

● Engine Laboratory

In the research and development and verification process of the latest engines, bench tests must be carried out to test the performance indicators and reliability of the engine. The analysis and processing of various failures in engine bench testing is the most important work of engine laboratory engineers.

After more than 6 days of “fighting”, this engine will eventually be disassembled. The experimenter will check the wear and tear of various parts of the engine. If there are failure symptoms (such as main bearing wear, cracks or failure), it is necessary to analyze the cause and formulate an improvement plan. The laboratory has now participated in some of the latest engine test projects of Peugeot Citroen, which reflects that the engine laboratory has reached the global unified standard of Peugeot Citroen in terms of engine testing capabilities.

● Prototype workshop

Next, the place we want to visit is the prototype workshop where only more than 20 senior employees of Changan Peugeot Citroen can enter. During the visit, there were no new cars parked in the workshop that required a high degree of confidentiality, so we were allowed to visit.

For a brand-new model, the prototype workshop will generally manufacture more than 10 complete vehicles in order to carry out different test projects at the same time, thereby speeding up the development of the model.

The prototype workshop of Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center is currently conducting trial production of this model. It can be understood from the situation seen on the spot and the communication with the person in charge of the workshop that the prototype trial production of new models launched by the DS brand in the future will be carried out in the R&D center to further utilize the advantages of localized R&D. The efficiency of model development.

● Sunshine simulation test room

As a vehicle, the weather durability is very important when the car comes and goes in the wind and rain. The laboratory in the picture can perform exterior light intensity and interior temperature testing. These two tests are aging tests that simulate 3 years of natural light exposure.

The laboratory will conduct exterior light intensity and interior temperature tests during the model development stage, pre-production stage and after model changes to verify whether the new interior and exterior parts meet Changan PSA’s standards.

● Four-column laboratory

In order to be able to test the chassis, interiors and luggage racks of new models in the laboratory, the Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center has set up a four-pillar laboratory. The laboratory can simulate the impact of the road on the wheels, and new models in the initial stage of development can complete basic chassis tests without actual road tests, thus shortening the development cycle of new models.

● NVH Lab

NVH is the abbreviation of the three words “Noise, Vibration, Harshness”. Chinese means noise, vibration and harshness. The above three appear at the same time and are inseparable in mechanical vibration such as automobiles, so they are often put together for research. Simply put, all the tactile and auditory sensations of the occupants in the car belong to the scope of NVH research. In addition, it also includes the strength and life of auto parts due to vibration. In order to study the NVH characteristics of new models, a semi-anechoic chamber is set up in the Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center to provide a “quiet” environment for noise data collection and obtain more realistic noise data.

Here is an example of the noise test of the electric seat motor. Changan Peugeot Citroen’s requirement is to reduce the high-frequency and low-frequency noise amplitude of the motor and allow a certain mid-frequency sound. In this way, the sound produced by the motor will not be too harsh. The adjustment of the motor is done by the component supplier. The supplier meets the requirements of Changan PSA by enhancing lubrication, adjusting the control of the motor, and optimizing the transmission system.

● Durability test room with four doors and two covers

The research center has a test room that can test the durability of the four doors and two covers of the vehicle. The durability of related parts was verified by repeatedly opening and closing the four doors and two covers of the vehicle. For example, the abnormal noise of the door switch and the leakage of the sealing tape that we may encounter in the daily use of the car are closely related to the durability of the four doors and two lids.

● In the rain room

When we visit the vehicle factory, we will see the newly assembled car enter the rain shower to test the sealing performance of the passenger compartment of the vehicle before it goes offline. The Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center has also set up a rain booth for similar tests, but the purpose of the test is to verify whether the model design and component performance can meet the requirements.

● Proving Ground

Experiments are the only criterion for testing truth. In the early stage of the development of new models, the mule car introduced above will be used to run a series of verification road tests to verify the feasibility of the new suspension design. When it comes to the pre-production stage, the new model will use trial cars to run a series of road tests to optimize vehicle performance, such as solving abnormal chassis/interior noise and optimizing handling issues. The above-mentioned tests will be carried out at the test track. Let’s take a look at the test track of the Changan Peugeot Citroen Research Center.

Compared with some of the large-scale test yards we have visited before, the test yard of Changan Peugeot Citroen is not large, focusing on the basic project tests of chassis performance, vehicle handling performance and vehicle abnormal noise. But please don't ignore these basic items. The above test items have been done carefully, which is of great significance to the driving texture and user experience of the whole vehicle. The standard behind the test is the brainchild of Peugeot Citroen, a century-old company.
