[YesAuto Professional Evaluation] We have already obtained a lot of news about Mercedes-Benz's new A-Class from various channels. Friends who are paying close attention to it are even familiar with the performance of its performance version of the A45 AMG. Nine months after the overseas test drive article was issued, we finally got the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class test car in China. Although the long wait has consumed the original freshness and enthusiasm, from the moment I saw it with my own eyes, I was deeply attracted by it again…
The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class has been launched in China in imported form. There are only 3 models in the whole series, equipped with a 1.6T high/low power engine and a 2.0T engine. The guide prices are: A180 252,000 and A200 278,000. And A260 358,000. This time we tested the A200 in the middle, equipped with a 1.6T high-power version of the engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
● Amazing appearance, eye-catching
If compared with the previous generation of A-class, the changes of the new A-class can be described as completely complete. If you don't understand, you can't imagine a connection between the two cars. We simply no longer discuss the previous generation of A-level, because the two are no longer comparable.
The new Mercedes-Benz A uses many brand-new design elements of the Mercedes-Benz family, such as irregularly shaped headlights. In the near future, we will see similar headlight shapes on many Mercedes-Benz cars, such as the next-generation C-class, CLA-class, GLA-class and even the new Mercedes-Benz S-class. All Mercedes-Benz A-Class vehicles adopt similar design concepts, highlighting young, dynamic, and fashionable elements, and are rich in design. Maybe not everyone likes it, but I'm sure there must be a lot of people fall in love with it at first sight.
● Young interior, exquisite and dynamic
The cockpit surrounded by carbon fiber-style plaques gives an aggressive feel. The racing-style bucket seats give great lateral support. Of course, this guy is a little harder to sit on. However, this does not affect the sense of ownership, refinement and belonging created by the orange ambient light under the headrest and the standard panoramic sunroof of the whole series.
When I saw the manual air conditioner under the center console, I thought I was wrong. Sorry, although the temperature selection is provided, the air volume really has to be adjusted manually. Like the B-class, Mercedes-Benz equips young people with this semi-automatic air conditioner at best. I thought about it for a long time, but I didn't even figure out why this is…
● Space experience: the front seat is great, the space is also good, the back row is relatively small
Space is not the selling point of the new A-class. The space between the front and rear rows forms a contrast: the driver’s sitting posture is very comfortable, the adjustment range is also large, and the 182cm height experiencer can have a punch in the head space; while the rear passengers are obviously not The object to be taken care of has little space, no central armrest and air outlet, and can only drool over the backrest of the front bucket seat.
● Storage space: the front row is more abundant, the back row is not enough
In terms of storage space in the car, it is obvious that the front passenger is still inclined. There are a lot of places to put things in the front row. Although most of the space is not large in absolute volume, they are relatively regular and practical; the rear row can be said to have only two storage spaces, one is two door panels, and the other is pitiful. At the rear of the front central armrest, the space here is a bit sad.
The trunk is not big, but after the seats are down, it is practical. In addition, the trunk is also relatively regular, and practicality can be guaranteed. The new A-class uses run-flat tires and is not equipped with tires, so there is still a little space under the trunk floor to hold some relatively flat items.
● Use the same powertrain as B200
The nominal power of the 1.6L turbocharged direct injection engine code-named M270 is not high. It is 156 horsepower like the Mercedes-Benz B200 from the MFA platform, and the torque of 250 N·m has a reasonable power range: 1250- 4000rpm. This means that when driving in the city, you can enjoy the peak torque of the engine most of the time. The 7G-DCT 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox matched with the engine is younger than the 7G-Tronic 7-speed automated manual gearboxes on many Mercedes-Benz in terms of “actual age” and program settings.
●The powertrain is “young but unassuming”
Perhaps due to the characteristics of the dual-clutch gearbox, when the D gear is engaged and the brake pedal is released, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is not in a hurry to move forward. After one or two seconds, the vehicle starts to move lazily. However, if you want to reach an idle creep speed of 6km/h, you have to wait a little longer. This feature will not cause any impact on unobstructed roads, and it will make you very uncomfortable if it is on very congested roads. You can only use the accelerator and the brake. Fortunately, the accelerator is well mastered in the early stages, and it won't rush, otherwise the right foot will feel good.
Although the floor-type accelerator pedal is not used like the B-class, but fortunately, the Mercedes-Benz A-class accelerator pedal has a certain degree of damping, and even some spring feet, so that it will not feel like a B-class. The early stage of the throttle is relatively soft, and when you step on it, you will find that its response is quite sensitive, while the power is not fierce at all. The gearbox usually upshifts at 2500rpm, the upshift movement is smooth and seamless, and the tachometer pointer jumps quickly, creating a It feels sporty.
During cruising, the power output is sufficient and stable, and people can't help but look forward to the pleasure of the engine's instant power. Immediately after the throttle was pushed to the bottom, the gearbox quickly responded. I saw the tachometer pointer rose steadily, and the power slowly increased. About 1 second later, I heard the roar of the engine suddenly increase, and the tachometer pointer pointed directly at 5000rpm, but it was a pity that I pushed it. The back feeling is not so strong, which is somewhat disappointing.
Press the ESM button on the center console to switch to the sport mode. The gearbox still follows the principle of “stepped” downshifting, and is unwilling to jump directly to the lowest gear available at the current speed. This method is very similar to 7G-Tronic . Fortunately, the gearbox in S mode is more dedicated, the response speed is very fast, and the shift logic is also very user-friendly. In the process of constant acceleration, deceleration and rapid acceleration, it can accomplish the task of power connection quite well, defeating 7G-Tronic.
There are gains and losses. From automatic gearboxes to dual-clutch gearboxes, this Mercedes is younger and sportier, but at low speeds, the gearbox also has many common problems with dual-clutch gearboxes, that is, obvious shifting frustrations. In the stop-and-go city roads, this shortcoming is magnified. When you encounter a red light ahead, when you slow down and stop, the feeling of frustration is transmitted to the cabin with the automatic downshift of the gearbox from time to time, which blackens the originally pleasant driving experience.
● Excellent steering, handling and comfort
Like the recently launched new or modified models such as the Mercedes-Benz B-class, the steering feel of the Mercedes-Benz A-class is no longer “sticky.” The electric power steering wheel has a fairly uniform steering force, and the power assist can also change with the speed of the car. At low speeds, the steering wheel is very light and the steering is a little wide. With the increase of vehicle speed, the steering resistance increases uniformly and linearly. When driving at medium and high speeds, the steering wheel appears unusually stable and the steering is very precise. When turning at a high speed, the vehicle will reflect the driving state to the driver through the steering wheel. As the speed increases, you can feel the steering damping getting greater and greater. It is reminding you: slow down the speed and “push the head” is coming. .
Mercedes-Benz's suspension tuning has never disappointed, and this has been confirmed again in the new A-Class. Thanks to the application of aluminum alloy material, the suspension has a fast rebound speed. It resolves the bumps of the road in an elegant way, and it is difficult for the body to shake with small potholes. The end of the suspension has a very high compression limit. Under severe vibration, the body can still be bumped and not too stiff, and comfort is guaranteed to a large extent. The powerful energy contained in the suspension system is amazing.
The temperature on the day of the fuel consumption test was 24°C. Due to continuous rainfall, the road was basically wet throughout the entire journey. The air conditioner was turned on throughout the test, and a total of 131km was driven, of which about 40% were very congested roads, about 20% were high speeds exceeding 100km/h, and the rest were unobstructed urban roads. During the test, the user-friendly automatic engine start-stop system saved a lot of fuel for the A-class. In the end, under the premise of an average speed of 30km/h, the Mercedes-Benz A-class achieved a fuel consumption score of 7.72L/100km, and the trip computer was very accurate. , We think the final result is quite excellent.
● Performance test: Accelerating without surprises, the brakes are still strong
The dual-clutch gearbox has a certain degree of self-protection when starting. The wheels will not slip at the start. After half a second, the engine starts to exert force, the front wheels slip slightly, and the grip is quickly restored. The acceleration momentum in the first gear was very strong, and after a quick and smooth shift, the acceleration in the second gear was significantly weakened. At around 83km/h, the gearbox shifted to 3rd gear, and the subsequent acceleration was delayed a lot of time. In the end, the 0-100km/h acceleration time we measured was 8.68 seconds, which was slightly slower than the official 8.3 seconds and was at a disadvantage compared to opponents of the same level.
Don't worry about the brakes. The wide brake pedal feels very good, making it easy to operate in daily driving. Throughout the braking process, the body has always maintained a fairly stable posture, and the braking force is also very uniform. The final score is 37.95 meters, nothing to say.
● Noise test:
During driving, wind noise will not pose a threat to the noise performance of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. However, I do not know whether the tire noise is too large or the chassis sound insulation engineering is not in place. When walking on some rough roads, the road noise is very obvious; In places with good road conditions, the main noise also comes from the direction of the chassis. Nevertheless, the final noise performance of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is still good. If the road noise is not so loud, the performance will definitely be very good.
● Summary: A fine car for young people
This is a boutique car that belongs to young people. From the exterior to the interior, the designers all penetrate the young and fashionable elements. Our “Saolan” A200 is unforgettable. You only need to glance at it in the car group and you will immediately notice it. The white and black cars next to it lose their luster in an instant.
In terms of configuration, the panoramic sunroof is definitely a selling point, but this strange configuration of manual air-conditioning may shut out some young people. In addition, compared with some other models equipped with 1.6T engine, the acceleration performance of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is not outstanding. From this perspective, you can see Mercedes-Benz's considerations. It is obvious that the new A-Class is sold to perceptual consumers. As for those who look at configuration and performance, they seem to have selectively given up.
Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2013 A200 Urban Type
The BMW 1 Series is the rival of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. There are many similarities between the two, but they actually have quite different orientations: A-class front-wheel drive, 1 series rear-wheel drive; A-class focus on sophistication and comfort, and 1 series emphasizes performance and handling. From this point of view, in fact, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class did not compete head-on with the BMW 1 Series, but each occupied a different market segment. For young people who have a strong desire for driving, the BMW 1 Series is undoubtedly the first choice; young people who pursue the quality of life and are loyal to the feeling should not miss the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Go and take a look at it. Maybe you will fall in love with it at a glance.
