  7. "The Spectator" talks about...

[YesAuto Design Decoding] In this issue of “The Spectator”, we take you to understand the Peugeot brand design from another perspective. The design of French cars has been labeled a lot: “romantic”, “not practical”, “anti-human”, etc. Are these all true? When we look at the Peugeot 5008 carefully, it may subvert your perception.

In this issue of “The Spectator”, we invited two post-90s car designers: Wang Lumeng Raymond and Zheng Wenchao Derrick, both of whom are currently working at Ikona Shanghai Design Center and are engaged in first-line automotive design work. They have a lot to express about the new Peugeot 5008.

Evaluating whether a car is good or not, everyone is in their own opinion. Turnip greens have their own loves, which is a very subjective thing. The exchanges with two young designers will allow us to look at the car from a more rational and professional perspective. The designers talk about the “dry goods” knowledge that design will bring to us (be sure to read the article carefully).

Compared with established design companies such as Penn Law, Broadcom, and Italdesign, its history is not long. Founded in 2010, its entry into the Chinese market coincides with the tide of domestic automobile development. It has undertaken many product design projects for Chinese brands and has become an industry player. Very influential companies.

—— Chanel don’t be vulgar, Peugeot don’t be boring

If you have studied those common luxury brands, you will find that Dior, Hermes, Chanel, LV, Givenchy, LSY, etc. are all French. Paris, France has always been a place of pilgrimage for the fashion and luxury industries, and the French nation is born with a unique understanding of art.

Many people describe the design of French cars in terms of the starry sky and romance. When I saw the concept cars that Peugeot once launched, I definitely agreed with them. Even the appearance and interior design of many years ago will not make you feel outdated today.

Although the trend of globalization makes car design no longer divide styles by national borders, the things in the bones of the French are still there. If you compare Volkswagen and Toyota to considerate and considerate girls, then the French car is a cold girl with a unique taste in front of the bar. She will not rush to cater to you, but quietly attract those who understand her. People, but this often requires a certain aesthetic threshold.

In 2018, Peugeot used the e-Legend concept car to pay tribute to its 120-year history, as well as the previous Peugeot 504 Coupe. This very retro car combines modern technology and stylish design elements. Regarding e-Legend officials once said: Boredom is not part of our DNA. (There is no boring word in our design DNA)

—— Compared with the German design, Peugeot always plays big

Compared with the German design, the design language of Peugeot has changed tremendously in each generation. You can say that it has not enough inheritance of historical models, but French designers certainly don't think so. Why should the car be conservative as the German? How can the brain full of inspiration and the incomparable brain hole have been confined in a box?

Judging from the design of Peugeot 308 in the past ten years, the front face part has been undergoing innovative adjustments, especially the 2012, 2014 and 2022 models. You can guess that they are covered by the logo. Is it a car series?

—— Peugeot 5008 in the eyes of the designer

Just like the Peugeot 5008 we are talking about today, even with a small facelift, the front of the car has undergone a lot of changes. From your aesthetic point of view, which one do you think is better?

Behind the good looks, what the two professional car designers saw is the increase in cost. Compared with the old thick-line grille decoration, the new car adopts a dot matrix layout, with the size of the small rectangular bright strips in the grille. The difference (the technical term is the use of parametric design) makes the grille more layered and three-dimensional.

The shape of the LED daytime running lights is the iconic design of a new generation of Peugeot. The car and SUV series are fully adopted. It is like a fangs, but also like a saber. It is very eye-catching when lit. As a long-term test of the new generation of Peugeot 508L, I thought it was a bit awkward at first. When I am used to it, I like this bold and jumpy design. It is like showing off with the bikers on the road. A different kind of saber.

The black bumper on the side skirts is very wide, and the chrome trim strips on it echo the trim strips on the roof. The wider guard bar is very practical for SUV models and can avoid a lot of small scratches on the paint.

The multiple horizontal lines on the car body mean multiple emphasis. This point has a theoretical basis from a psychological point of view. When the same element appears on an object multiple times, we are often impressed by it, so in other art fields There are similar applications.

—— Legal system design techniques you didn't pay attention to

Designer Wang Lumeng believes that the interior of the 5008 is more worthy of recognition, saying that the design philosophy and methods of Peugeot have been learned and used by many car companies, such as the ergonomic design of steering wheel and instrumentation, and piano-style central control buttons. Wait.

The ergonomic design of the instrument panel and steering wheel of the Peugeot family is relatively unique. For a long time, people have been accustomed to seeing instrument information from the hollow of the steering wheel, but French cars are not stuck with this.

The two young designers have a bit of obsessive-compulsive disorder (professionalism), “Although the button design in the row below looks very beautiful, you will find that the gap between the buttons is still slightly uneven.” This is actually avoidable in design, such as filling in transitional decorations, but for the sake of simplicity and unity of style, perhaps French designers did not care about these details.

Although the 5008 has three rows of seats and is close to 4.7 meters in length, its interior width is not too large. How to make the car look more spacious, in fact, designers have a lot of tricks to “deceive the eyes”.

The second method is named “Length and Shortness Comparison Method” for the time being. For example, Peugeot 4008 and 5008 divide the instrument panel into upper and lower layers. The upper layer is longer and the lower layer is shorter. The contrast of one long and one short will give the human visual experience. You will feel that the upper level of the dashboard is very spacious. (The same is a psychological technique. Without reference, it is difficult for humans to evaluate a single thing)

On the Peugeot 5008, the romantic Frenchman obviously studied how to expand the space in the car in exchange for the market. For example, the second row of seats can be moved forwards and backwards, and the leg space can be expanded.

Today's French cars have undergone a lot of changes in design, and they have the unconventional side and the practical side. Just like the detachable third-row seat of the Peugeot 5008, it can be used as a “little sofa” when you are camping outdoors.

to sum up:

In recent years, for the Chinese market, Peugeot has many localized product strategies, such as replacing the original 3008 with a larger 4008 (there is no 4008 in the European market), and launching a 5-seater version and a 7-seater version on the 5008 to meet The needs of different consumers. Returning to the styling design, Peugeot has its own unique style in appearance and interior design compared to Volkswagen, Toyota and Chinese brands, and does not follow popular design schemes. One day when you pass by a Peugeot car, you may inadvertently be conquered by that unique charm.
