[Car House Test Drive] Speaking of British cars, we will have a series of words such as gentleman and luxury in our minds, but the impression of this kind of car seems to be too far away from us… Now, a domestically made car with pure British descent Cars are approaching us, and the relatively more affordable prices give us the opportunity to enjoy classic cars from Great Britain. What we want to introduce to you today is the test drive experience of the MG 7 automatic model produced by Nanjing MG.
Note: Since this article focuses on the driving experience of the MG 7 automatic transmission model, the test drive article starts with the driving experience, and after the third page of this article, it briefly explains other feelings of this model.
Driving experience-multiple functions of the gearbox
Sitting in the MG 7, it feels like it doesn't have a lot of space, but the electric seat that can be adjusted in eight directions still feels good, with three sets of memory functions. Adjust your seat, fasten your seat belt, and set the fire on the road!
The focus of this test drive is “automatic transmission”, so we must first talk about this 5-speed automatic transmission from Aisin. The gears of the MG 7 automatic transmission model are very compact. It only takes a small stroke to pull the gear from P gear to D gear. The round gear handle feels good.
Next to the gear, there is a shift mode selection button, which has three functions, namely “sports mode”, “snow mode” and “economy mode”.
Sport mode: In this mode, the gearbox will control the speed of the shift at about 3500rpm, and the speed will remain above 2500 rpm after the shift is completed. Combined with the MG 7 1.8T model, the maximum torque speed range is 2100-4000rpm From the data point of view, the use of “S” block allows the turbocharger to be fully utilized.
Snow mode: Press the button down to convert to snow mode. In this mode, the gearbox will start in 2 gears and the speed is controlled at 1500rpm. When the car starts, you can feel the engine sound very low, which is through high gear. Low torque to prevent skidding that may be caused by starting on snowy roads.
Economy mode: Pull the button back to “E”, which is the economy mode. This mode is generally used when driving on a good road. The gearbox will select the best gear and shift timing to drive to ensure economy.
In the field of mid-level cars, there are not many models with multi-function gearboxes. The MG 7 automatic model has a great advantage in gearboxes, with good ride comfort and functionality, but the manual mode has a slightly slower response speed.
Interlude- We accidentally discovered when parking the car that we can still move the lever without stepping on the brake when the car key is removed, which makes us worry that the ignition may “flee the car”. We have done ignition tests in each gear, and found that it can only be fired in the P gear, and other gears cannot be fired. The protection measures are still in place.
Through the operation, it can be clearly felt that this is a car that pays attention to the feel of driving. The handlebars, steering wheel, and handbrake are all wrapped in leather, and the handbrake feels particularly good.
When you tap the accelerator and accelerate, the gear shift is also very smooth, the collision is very small, and it feels “gentleman” when driving at a constant speed. When cruising at a speed of 60-80 km/h, the speed is very stable. The oil and refueling suddenly decelerate or accelerate, and the ride comfort is good.
This automatic transmission also has a manual mode. The process of shifting from D to M during driving is very short, but when using manual mode to shift gears, the lag is slightly longer. The transmission takes about 1 second after the shift operation. The gear will be shifted into the corresponding gear. The forced downshift function of the gearbox is not very sensitive during driving. In the economy mode, the downshift is not very active even if you step on the accelerator. It can be seen that the gearbox adjustment focuses on comfort.
So is the power of the 1.8T engine buried by the automatic gearbox? On the mountain road, open the “S” gear of the gearbox, we tried to step on the accelerator deeply, the speed increased to about 3000 rpm, then the strength of the engine was really released. When accelerating at full throttle, the tachometer does not fall back until 6500rpm. The sound produced by the engine and exhaust pipe is not small, but it is not unpleasant and full of passion. It seems that this “gentleman” is also very confident when he needs to indulge.
The throttle response of the MG 7 automatic transmission model is relatively straightforward, with almost no lag. However, due to the emphasis on comfort of the automatic transmission and the lag of turbocharging, the response of the MG 7 is still a little slow when accelerating sharply.
The MG 7 automatic transmission model uses a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 118/5500kW/rpm and a maximum torque of 215/2100-4000Nm/rpm. From the data point of view, the level is average, but when you step on the accelerator, MG The MG 7's rear acceleration capability is also good. In contrast, the intervention of the MG 7 turbocharger is later than that of other turbocharged models.
When cornering, you can feel the steering wheel is very heavy. It requires a little effort to operate when cornering at high speed. The feeling of sinking direction is more obvious when parking. In addition, the MG 7 uses a mahogany steering wheel, which is easy to cause slipping when turning. The phenomenon.
The brakes of MG 7 are very gentle in the first half of the brake stroke. Continue to step down, and the braking force will start to increase evenly. If it is not for emergency braking, there will be no strong sense of deceleration during the whole process, and the adjustment will be biased. Comfortable. However, if you frequently brake in a traffic jam in the city, the too soft brakes in the first half may make some people with less driving experience feel less confident, so the brake timing should be more advanced.
Summary of driving experience——
1. The engine power output is stable.
2. The 5-speed automatic gearbox has three functions: snow mode, economy mode and sports mode.
3. The throttle response is very direct.
1. The manual mode of the gearbox reacts slowly.
2. The front part of the brake is too soft and requires a larger advance.
3. The steering wheel is too heavy.
Brief comment on appearance——
Drive the car to the mountain, turn off the engine, when the gradually cooling engine makes a slight crackling, we can take a good look at its appearance. MG 7 parked there quietly, it will give people a very elegant feeling, because you can hardly find an angular place in its body, the transition of the lines between the parts are all rounded corners and curves. Convergent. So we found a lot of circular elements on the car body.
The appearance of the MG 7 automatic transmission model is basically the same as that of the manual transmission model, except that the details of the grid and exhaust pipes are slightly different. We will explain them in detail later. Viewed from the front, it can be regarded as a standard British car. The four-round headlights make the front face calm and hideous. The chrome-plated mesh air intake of the MG 7 1.8 manual transmission model turned black on the automatic transmission model, but the shape is still very unique, similar to the appearance of a barbed wire fence.
The MG 7 1.8T automatic transmission model is not very different in appearance from the 1.8 manual transmission model. In addition to the more obvious shape of the net, there is also the shape of the exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe of the 1.8T model is more beautiful, and the sound when idling is also very deep.
Looking at the MG 7 from the side, you may not be able to tell its brand and model at the first time, but it will also reflect that it is a British-style car. The waistline drawn with chrome-plated decorative strips is very charming. It is affectionately compared to the “cigar-shaped” body and the sliding rear end to make it unique. The lines can be described as stable and there is no lack of movement.
to sum up–
● Advantages: The overall shape is stable and the lines are beautiful.
● Disadvantages: The appearance that is too individual is not acceptable to most people.
The MG 7 1.8T automatic transmission is a very gentleman and a very personalized model, but gentlemen sometimes need to be sporty. The perfect combination of comfort and sportiness is what MG 7 pursues, but there is no end to it. It's not perfect, it can only be said to be a medium-sized car that is mediocre in all aspects. However, it can be seen from the launch of the MG 7 automatic transmission model that the MG 7 equipped with a 1.8T engine and a 5-speed automatic manual transmission is significantly higher than the 1.8 model, making the MG 7 series model enter the market. On track. (Photos and texts/Photographed by Wang Miao from Auto House: Zheng Yu)
