  7. Urban commuting program Volkswagen...

[YesAuto Wonderful Car Life] Recently, Volkswagen released a number of pure electric concept cars at the Geneva Motor Show. In addition, Volkswagen also brought electric scooters called Cityskater and Streetmate. The completion of the former is close to mass production, while the latter is a medium-range electric concept scooter.

Volkswagen believes that increasingly congested urban traffic will cause many people to consider new, interesting and zero-emission vehicles like Streetmate electric scooters. Convenient, fast and flexible to shuttle through the streets and alleys, while avoiding the annoyance of parking, the Streetmate electric scooter is the best choice for short-distance commuting in the city.

The Streetmate electric scooter weighs 65 kg. The 1.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack is placed under the pedal. The motor with a maximum power of 2kW (approximately 2.7 horsepower) is integrated in the rear wheel hub and has a braking energy recovery system. Streetmate's cruising range is 34 kilometers, and there is no problem with commuting between short and medium distances. The top speed of 45km/h is also sufficient for an electric scooter. In addition to perforated disc brakes, Streetmate electric scooters are also equipped with ABS anti-lock braking system.

Streetmate’s battery pack is detachable, which is convenient for car owners to take the battery home or charge it in the office. Car owners can also charge the scooter on a dedicated charging station, and the battery can be fully charged in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Although Volkswagen’s ideals are very full, the reality is that this kind of scooters has already blossomed in the Chinese market, but there are frequent traffic accidents caused by electric scooters… Volkswagen seems to have taken this into account. It is reported that in the European market, Streetmate’s Users need to obtain driving qualifications and wear helmets, and electric scooters must also register and get insurance. Only after meeting the above requirements can they drive on the road.

The Streetmate electric scooter is very convenient to operate. Users can choose the riding method they like. I think most men will choose to ride in a standing position. After all, sitting and riding are too much…The middle of the handlebar is equipped with a 5.3-inch waterproof display. It can display necessary reference information such as battery status and remaining mileage. Users can also intelligently interconnect their mobile phones and scooters, and obtain navigation routes through the App. Users can also monitor the scooters safely on their mobile phones.

Let’s take a look at the Cityskater, which is close to mass production. This is a three-wheeled electric scooter. The front two wheels are responsible for steering. The rear wheel is equipped with a 0.4kW (about 0.5 horsepower) in-wheel motor. The cruising range is 19 Kilometers, the top speed is 14.5 kilometers per hour. The Cityskater weighing about 15 kilograms is more suitable to be placed in the trunk of a car. For some reason, this concept always reminds me of driving artifacts… It is different from the layout of most scooters. Cityskater extends from the two front wheels. A pedal, the controller extends forward from the rear wheel. The controller is mainly used to start, accelerate and brake the scooter. The user needs to control the direction by changing the center of gravity of the leg.

Cityskater's charging is also very convenient. The 200Wh lithium battery pack can be charged from 0 to 50% in less than one hour with a household power supply. The foldable Cityskater is convenient for users to put it in the trunk or take it on the train. However, Volkswagen is more optimistic about Streetmate, believing that it will be the most favorite way of commuting for German office workers. In this regard, Volkswagen has to learn from its Chinese counterparts. After all, commuting with electric scooters is in the eyes of office workers in major cities in China. It's nothing new anymore.
